“Blackout” Video Wins Award

• Over the past four summers, teacher intern Tom Smith (MCPS) led the development of a Sun-Earth Connection student workbook and Video named “Blackout”

  • The 20 minute video provides a unique view of solar-storms and their effect on the earth’s environment
  • GSFC personnel who assisted were: Drs. James Green, Bill Taylor, and Sten Odenwald

• 'Blackout' won the Crystal Award in The Communicator Awards Video Competition for 1999 in two catagories

  • The winning categories were 1) Education; 2) Special Effects/Animation
  • There were 3,275 entries from 49 states and seven countries

• The Crystal Award is their highest level of recognition

  • Entries are judged by industry professionals who look for companies and individuals whose talent exceeds a high standard of excellence and whose work serves as a benchmark for he industry.”
