The IMAGE mission is scheduled for launch in 2000 and will, for the first time, provide the coordinated global magnetospheric observations necessary to develop a coherent picture of the storm and substorm processes. Eact of the instruments on IMAGE will make important global measurements which will determine the structure and dynamics of a variety of plasma populations and the boundaries between them. Comparison between the IMAGE observations will allow researchers to determine the global inter- relationship between important magnetospheric plasma populations and boundaries on a time scale necessary to understand the substorm process better.
