IMAGE/HENA: Examples of the ring current - IMF relation P. C. Brandt, D. G. Mitchell, Y. Ebihara, E. C. Roelof The talk presents several dramatic examples of how the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) appears to effect the ring current. Time sequences of ENA images of the ring current obtained by the ENA imager HENA onboard the IMAGE satellite are presented together with the lagged IMF obtained by the ACE spacecraft. One example from 23 May, 2000, shows that ENA fluxes from the dayside ring current that decrease rapidly during 12 min. The start of the decrease is simultaneous with a change in the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) B_z from +20 nT to -5 nT. A second example from 29 October, 2000 shows how a strong IMF B_y appears to intensify the nightside ring current for days. The diversity of the morphology and dynamics of the HENA images implies that the drift trajectories of the ring current particles depend strongly on the IMF. _______________ Submitted to the Spring 2001 AGU Meeting, Boston, Massachusetts
