The Astronomy Career Game
Sombrero Galaxy

My first year as a post-doc is a lot of fun. I am continuing the work that I started, and now have to write my own grant proposals, and apply for observing time at observatories to continue my work. I feel like I have a lot of momentum behind me as I continue to work, butI am not out of the woods yet.

Even though I have a 2-year post-Doc position, there is no guarantee that I will be able to get a permanent position in astronomy after this work is over. If I am lucky, I will get into an academic position and eventually become a tenured professor ,or I will get a job working for the US government as a civil servant. These are the only two, known, ways to get a permanent, lifetime job. If I don't get these, I will have to live from grant to grant on 'soft money' for the next 35 years!
