Recent Activities

The spacecraft proposals are due at SwRI on July 29th. We expect to receive at least five proposals. The proposal review will take place at SwRI during the weeks of August 5th and August 12th. We plan to have a contractor in place by the end of August.

The HENA team has decided on a final instrument design, which includes the collimator, door, foils, and start and stop MCPs from INCA and the solid state detector, imaging amplifiers, and digital and analog electronics from the originally proposed HENA. This new design preserves the excellent mass analysis capability of HENA while achieving the higher angular resolution of INCA.

Discussions on the MENA design have been ongoing since the first team meeting. The alternatives are to increase the geometric factor and UV rejection of the proposed MENA, which has good mass separation or to go the slit-camera, TOF- only approach proposed by Dave McComas at the first team meeting. As agreed to at that meeting, Mei-Ching Fok has run simulations for hydrogen and for all ions at several different energies. The results of these simulations can be found at ftp://cyclops.msfc.nasa.gov/pub/IMAGE. It appears that for this particular model mass analysis is only needed for energies below about 5 keV. A decision will be made on July 31st on which design to pursue for image.
