The Formation of Plasmaspheric Plumes and the Loss of Plasmaspheric Plasma to the Boundary Layers M. Spasojevic, D. L. Carpenter, U. S. Inan, B. R. Sandel, and B. W. Reinisch The IMAGE EUV instrument images the distribution of cold plasma in the Earth's plasmasphere and inner magnetosphere. By tracking the location of the plasmapause in sequences of EUV images, we will show detailed analysis of the global response of the plasmasphere to a geomagnetic disturbance including erosion of the plasmasphere and the formation of drainage plumes in the noon to dusk quadrant. Also, by comparing the change in intensity in sequential images, we will attempt to quantify the loss of plasma to the dayside magnetopause. _______________ Presented at the Magnetospheric Imaging Workshop, Yosemite National Park, California, U.S.A., Feb. 9 - 13, 2003.
