Extreme Convection Conditions for the Plasmasphere D. L. Gallagher, M. Adrian, J. Goldstein, B. Sandel, S. F. Fung, J. L. Green, R. F. Benson The process of eroding the plasmasphere is dominated by the strength of magnetospheric convection and the ionospheric-plasmaspheric shielding response. Conditions of extreme erosion offer a unique opportunity to examine this process. IMAGE Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) imager observations of the plasmasphere are now available for such conditions, where the plasmasphere is sometimes found to almost disappear. Global EUV images are used together with dynamic plasmasphere modeling to describe the convection electric field necessary to produce observed thermal plasma distributions under extreme conditions. IMAGE Radio Plasma Imager (RPI) observations will be used in combination with EUV images to establish absolute plasmaspheric densities during these times. These results will be compared with established measures the cross polar cap potential drop and subauroral electric fields so as to evaluate our current understanding of this basic process in the inner magnetosphere.
