SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION
HAS LAUNCHED!

Application Deadline: February 29, 2008

In honor of The INSPIRE Project, Inc.'s Dr. Bill Taylor, The INSPIRE Project, Inc. with its partners at the DC Space Grant Consortium, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, and other science and technology organizations, established this annual science scholarship competition. Scientifically oriented senior high school and college students who will be attending a DC metro area college or university in Fall 2008 are encouraged to apply.


SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

$5,000 for 1st place

Scholarships are intended to recognize highly motivated science students and encourage their continued course of study in the physical sciences and will be awarded to students seeking funding for expenses at a Washington DC area college or university for the 2008-09 academic year in two categories.


COMPETION OBJECTIVES

This competition seeks to encourage students to conduct individual or group research that will focus on Space Physics, Astronomy, Meteorology, Geology and other Earth Sciences.  While designing projects identify how it has a connection to INSPIRE's Very Low Frequency study of natural or manmade phenomena.  Judging of research projects based on the criteria below:

  • Creativity and design of the project
  • Clear project goals and the methods used to accomplish those goals
  • Analysis of project results and their relationship to project goals
  • Clarity and quality of the project's written report
  • Clarity and quality of the project's presentation (finalists only)

 

SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION SCHEDULE & DEADLINES

  • February 29, 2008 – Deadline for receipt of Application and Research Project Outline
  • April 1, 2008 – Deadline for receipt of Final Research Project
  • April 11, 2008 – Finalists notified; Presentations scheduled
  • April 14 – 25, 2008 – Finalists' Presentations
  • May 1, 2008 – Announcement of Scholarship Recipients

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must:

  • Mandatory U.S. Citizenship
  • Demonstrate above-average performance in their academic work through their GPA
  • Be registered for full-time study as a student in good standing in a high school, college or university
  • Attend a Washington , DC area university or college for the 2008-09 school year
  • Submit two letters of recommendation with at least one from a teacher or faculty member.

 

RULES & PROCEDURES

  • Materials must be received by the stated deadlines.
  • Application must be filled out completely and contain a "Proposed Research Statement."
  • Final research project written report cannot exceed 8 pages (double-spaced, 12 pt Times font).
  • After review of all final research projects' written reports, finalists will be selected.
  • Finalists will then be notified and a time scheduled to give a presentation of their work to the judges' panel.
  • Each presentation must be given by the project leader or individual and cannot exceed 20 minutes. Materials used in the presentation become the property of The INSPIRE Project, Inc.
  • All decisions by the judges' panel will be final.
  • Scholarship awards will be paid directly to recipients. If scholarship recipients do not attend a Washington DC Metropolitan area university or college in the 2008-09 academic year, scholarship funds will be forfeited.
