Deadline for 2007-08 Scholarship Competition Application |
In honor of INSPIRE co-founder Bill Taylor , INSPIRE with its partners at the DC Space Grant Consortium, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, QSS, Raytheon and Woman Friday, LLC, has established a science scholarship competition. Scholarships will be awarded to senior high school students and college students (undergraduate or graduate) seeking scholarship funding for expenses at a Washington DC Metropolitan area university /college and high school for the upcoming academic year.
Scholarships will be awarded for the 2007-08 academic year in two categories:
- Senior High School Students:
$5,000 for 1 st place, $3,000 for 2 nd place, and $2,000 for 3 rd place
- University/College Students (undergraduate or graduate):
$5,000 for 1 st place, $3,000 for 2 nd place, and $2,000 for 3 rd place
These scholarships are intended to recognize highly motivated science students and encourage their continued course of study in the physical sciences. Scholarships will be awarded based on:
- Above-average performance in academics
- Participation in a Very Low Frequency (VLF) research project
- Demonstrated leadership qualities
COMPETITION OBJECTIVES
This competition seeks to encourage students to conduct individual or group research that will focus on understanding VLF electromagnetic waves (up to 10 kHz in frequency). These waves can be either natural or manmade phenomena. Judging of research projects based on the criteria below:
- Creativity and design of the project
- Clear project goals and the methods used to accomplish those goals
- Analysis of project results and their relationship to project goals
- Clarity and quality of the project’s written report
- Clarity and quality of the project’s presentation (finalists only)
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must:
- Be citizens of the United States
- Demonstrate above-average performance in their academic work through their GPA
- Be registered for full-time study as a student in good standing in a high school, college or university
- Attend a Washington DC Metropolitan area university or college for the 2007-2008 school year
- Attend a Washington DC Metropolitan area high school for the 2007-2008 school year with plans to attend a Washington DC Metropolitan area university or college for the 2008-2009 school year.
RULES & PROCEDURES
- Materials must be received by the stated deadlines below.
- Application must be filled out completely and contain a “Proposed Research Statement.”
- Final research project written report cannot exceed 8 pages (double-spaced, 12 pt Times font).
- After review of all final research projects’ written reports, finalists will be selected.
- Finalists will then be notified and a time scheduled to give a presentation of their work to the judges’ panel.
- Each presentation must be given by the project leader or individual and cannot exceed 20 minutes. Materials used in the presentation become the property of The INSPIRE Project, Inc.
- All decisions by the judges’ panel will be final.
- Scholarship awards will be paid directly to recipients. If scholarship recipients do not attend a Washington DC Metropolitan area university or college in the 2008-09 academic year, scholarship funds will be forfeited.
